Traditionally, a bitch spay involved removing the ovaries and uterus (ovariohysterectomy). However, many vets including ourselves are now recommending just removing the ovaries (ovariectomy). This type of spaying has been done for decades in America and Europe and it has been shown that there are no differences in problems if the uterus is left behind. The advantages are that removing the ovaries allows a smaller incision to be made therefore resulting in less pain for the patient.
In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer the option to have the spay done by keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. By making tiny incisions, we can use an endoscopic camera and specialised equipment to perform the spay (both ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy).
The benefits of keyhole surgery are…
Laparoscopic spays are more expensive than a conventional spay due to the specialised equipment involved, so if you would like an estimate then please call the surgery.
If you have any further questions or would like to discuss the options in more depth then please call the surgery and ask to speak to one of the vets or nurses.
